Practice Management vs Accounting vs Tax Filing vs Audit Software
Short answer: Accounting software keeps a business's books, tax filing software prepares and files returns, audit software documents the evidence behind an audit opinion, and practice management software runs the CA firm itself: clients, engagements, deadlines, time, billing and documents. They answer different questions, so most Indian CA firms use all four, and a few suites combine two of them.
Last updated 13 October 2026. Written for CA, audit and tax firms in India. MyPract is a practice management product, so we say plainly which of the other three jobs it does not do.
Vendors blur these categories. A tax suite may include "office management", an accounting product may add a practice module, and practice tools increasingly show GST data. The easiest way to tell them apart is to ask whose records the software holds and what output it produces. For a ranked list of practice tools, see our guide to the best practice management software for CA firms.
What does each type of software do?
| Accounting software | Tax filing software | Audit software | Practice management software | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whose records | The client's (one business) | The taxpayer's (one return at a time) | One audit engagement | The CA firm's (all clients) |
| Main output | Books of account, financial statements | Computations, returns, forms | Working papers, audit file | Task lists, timesheets, invoices, reports |
| Main user | Client's accountant, or the firm on the client's behalf | Tax team | Audit team and reviewer | Everyone in the firm |
| Key Indian rules | Audit trail (edit log) for companies | Income Tax e-filing, GST, TDS | SA 230 audit documentation | UDIN records, DSC custody, data protection |
| Typical examples | Tally, Zoho Books, Busy | Saral TaxOffice, Income Tax utilities | Workpaper tools, audit modules in suites | Jamku, Zoho Practice, MyPract, CCH iFirm |

Accounting software records a business's transactions and produces its ledgers, trial balance and financial statements. A CA firm uses it in two ways: on behalf of clients whose books it writes, and to review clients who keep their own.
For companies, the choice of accounting software has a legal angle. Auditors must report under Rule 11(g) of the Companies (Audit and Auditors) Rules, 2014 on whether the company's accounting software kept an audit trail (edit log) through the year, and ICAI has issued an implementation guide on that reporting.[1] That is a requirement on the client's books, not on the firm's practice software.
What is tax filing software for?
Tax software computes tax and prepares returns and forms for Income Tax, TDS and GST. Returns are filed on the government portals, either directly or through registered intermediaries. The Income Tax Department lets e-Return Intermediaries (ERIs) add clients and file returns and forms on their behalf, using the department's utilities, its API or their own offline software.[2]
Desktop suites such as Saral TaxOffice are built around computation and e-filing; we compare that kind of tool with practice software in Saral TaxOffice alternative. Tax software tells you a return was filed. It rarely tells you who in the firm is working on the next fifty returns, how long they took or whether the client has been billed.
What is audit software for?
Audit software holds the evidence and reasoning behind an audit: planning, risk assessment, working papers, sampling, review notes and the final audit file. In India the standard that governs this record is SA 230, Audit Documentation, on which ICAI publishes a revised implementation guide.[3]
Some firms use dedicated working-paper software. Others use the audit modules inside a wider suite; Zoho Practice, for example, includes workpapers, and for clients on Zoho Books adjustments flow back to their books (see MyPract vs Zoho Practice). Many smaller Indian firms still keep working papers in Excel and Word files on a shared drive.
What is practice management software for?
Practice management software runs the firm. It holds the client list, every engagement and recurring compliance task, who owns it, when it is due, how long it took and whether it has been billed. It is the only one of the four that every person in the firm uses every day.
India-specific practice tools add things the other three don't cover: a DSC register for tokens the firm holds, UDIN logs against engagements, and portal data such as GST filing status and notices. Which of these matter most depends on your mix of audit, tax and compliance work.
Where do the categories overlap?
| Combination | What it looks like | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Practice management + accounting | Practice module tied to the vendor's own ledger product | Zoho Practice with Zoho Books (comparison); Xero Practice Manager with Xero (comparison) |
| Practice management + tax portal sync | Office management plus Income Tax, GST and TRACES data | Jamku with its separate Jamku Portal (comparison) |
| Practice management + workpapers | Engagement tracking and audit documentation in one place | Zoho Practice workpapers (comparison) |
| Practice management + US tax software | Practice suite tied to one US return product | Onvio with UltraTax CS (comparison) |
Suites are convenient when most of your clients use the same ledger. They are less useful when clients are spread across Tally, Busy, Zoho Books and spreadsheets, which is common for Indian practices.
Which do you need first?
- Tax filing software comes first for almost every practice, because returns have fixed statutory due dates.
- Practice management software pays off once more than one person shares the work, or once the firm bills on time.
- Audit software becomes important when statutory or tax audits are a regular, reviewed part of the practice.
- Accounting software depends on your clients: you often use whatever they already run.
Where does MyPract fit?
MyPract is practice management software only. It runs clients, engagements, tasks, time with approvals, invoices from approved time, documents, a client portal and a DSC register, and it reads GST portal data (filing status, notices, ledgers and GSTR-2B reconciliation) through a GSTN-licensed GST Suvidha Provider. See the features page.
It does not do the other three jobs. MyPract does not file GST, income tax or TDS returns, has no Income Tax or TRACES sync, does not integrate with Tally or any ledger, and has no audit workpapers. Firms keep their tax software and audit files alongside it. The full list is on the facts page.
How we checked
On 13 October 2026 we checked ICAI's publication pages for the Rule 11(g) audit trail guide and the SA 230 implementation guide, and the Income Tax Department's e-Filing help page on ERIs. Competitor examples come from our existing comparisons, each checked against the vendor's own pages.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between accounting software and practice management software?
Accounting software records one business's transactions and produces its books and financial statements. Practice management software tracks a firm's work across all its clients, such as engagements, deadlines, time and invoices. A CA firm uses accounting software on behalf of clients and practice management software for itself.
Can practice management software file GST or ITR?
Generally no. Returns are filed on the government portals or through tax software. Some practice tools read portal data to show filing status or notices. MyPract reads GST portal data only and does not file anything.
Is audit software the same as practice management software?
No. Audit software holds the working papers, evidence and conclusions for a single audit, as SA 230 requires. Practice management software schedules the audit, assigns the team, records time and bills the client. Some suites, such as Zoho Practice, include workpapers alongside practice management.
Which software should a new CA firm buy first?
Most new practices start with the tax filing tool they need for returns, because that work has fixed due dates. Practice management becomes worth it once more than one person shares the work. Audit software matters once statutory audits are a regular part of the practice.
Can one tool do all four jobs?
Not well, in India today. Some suites pair practice management with their own accounting product (Zoho Practice with Zoho Books) and some desktop suites pair tax filing with office management. Most firms still run a separate tool for at least one of the four.
