Best Practice Management Software for Auditors and Audit Firms (2026)

By the MyPract team Updated 11 min read

Short answer: There is no single best tool for every audit firm. For Indian CA and audit firms, and cross-border audit teams, that want audits run as engagements with task dependencies, approved time, billing in each client's currency and an AI assistant, MyPract, a global, AI-native platform billed in rupees in India, is the best fit. Jamku suits Indian firms that need UDIN tracking, CCH iFirm suits larger multi-office firms, IRIS suits the UK, Xero Practice Manager and MYOB suit Australia and New Zealand, and CCH Axcess or Onvio suit US CPA firms. None of them is audit workpaper software; tools such as Caseware and Inflo do that job.

Last updated 22 October 2026. MyPract is our product. We rank by best fit, link every competitor claim to the vendor page it came from, and say where competitors are stronger. Method and exchange rates are in the How we checked section below.

Audit firms buy two different kinds of software and often confuse them. Practice or engagement management software runs the firm: which audits are due, who is on each one, what is blocked, how many hours have gone in and what can be billed. Audit file or workpaper software holds the audit itself: risk assessment, testing, evidence, review notes and the trial balance. This roundup is about the first kind, with a short section on the second so you know where each tool fits. For the wider picture, see practice management vs accounting vs tax vs audit software.

What is engagement management software for audit firms?

Engagement management software treats each audit as a job with a start, an end and a budget. For an audit firm, that means:

  • One record per audit, with the client, the engagement partner or manager, the period, budgeted hours and fee.
  • Tasks in order, with owners, due dates and dependencies, so fieldwork cannot be marked done before planning, and the report waits for review.
  • Client requests for trial balances, ledgers, confirmations and schedules, tracked in one place instead of across email threads.
  • Time against the engagement, approved by a manager, so budget-versus-actual and billing come from the same numbers.
  • Visibility across all audits: what is late, what is over budget, and who is overloaded during audit season.

It does not replace the audit file. Standards such as SA 230 in India (and ISA 230 elsewhere) govern the audit documentation itself, which lives in workpaper software or an indexed audit file. Our statutory audit engagement checklist shows how the two fit together step by step.

The best tools by type of audit firm

MyPract: best for CA and audit firms that bill on approved time

MyPract is a global, AI-native practice management platform for accounting, audit, tax and advisory teams, built for cross-border teams and clients, which bills Indian firms in rupees. It runs each statutory, tax or internal audit as an engagement with a client, service line, manager, dates, budget hours and fee, in list and Kanban views. Tasks under it have assignees, due dates, planned and actual hours, subtasks and dependencies. Staff log time by timesheet or timer; managers approve it and lock past periods so approved hours can't change; invoices are raised from approved, billable time. Documents sit in folders by client and engagement with version history, and each engagement has a client portal link that opens only for mapped client contacts after an emailed 6-digit code. Portal clients are not charged.

For Indian work it adds a DSC register (custody, expiry status, signatory-to-client mapping, usage log) and read-only GST portal data. Reports cover utilisation, engagement burndown and overdue tasks. Six roles (Owner, Admin, Manager, Staff, Viewer, Client), enforced in the database with row-level security, control who approves time and who only does the work, which suits firms with article assistants. An AI assistant answers from every module, because there is one data model, and creates engagements, tasks, time and invoices only after confirmation; Claude and ChatGPT can be connected as agents through MCP, bound by the same roles. Data domicile by country: a paying firm outside India gets its own instance in its country, so its database, files and server functions stay in-country. Today, with customers in India, everything runs in Mumbai (AWS ap-south-1) through Supabase.

Price: ₹12,000/year for the first 5 users, then ₹4,800 per user for users 6–30 and ₹4,000 per user for users 31+, excluding 18% GST, for firms billed in India, with no setup fee. A 12-person firm pays ₹12,000 + 7 × ₹4,800 = ₹45,600/year + GST. Firms outside India pay Startup $189/year for up to 5 users, Growing $49 and Enterprise $39 per user per year. A 3-month trial needs no card. See pricing and the full list of facts.

Limits for auditors: MyPract is not audit software. It holds no workpapers, tracks no UDINs, creates no engagement letters, and can't apply a checklist template to an engagement in one step.

Jamku: best for Indian firms that need UDIN tracking and tax-portal sync

Jamku is a long-standing Indian office management tool. Its separate Jamku Portal product syncs Income Tax, GST and TRACES data and tracks UDIN and DSC expiry.[7] It has native mobile and desktop apps and an attendance add-on.[6] Jamku's per-user licence is lower than MyPract's from the sixth user, but its pricing page says implementation consulting is mandatory from 15 users and charged over and above the licence.[6] See MyPract vs Jamku.

CCH iFirm: best for larger multi-office firms that want capacity planning

Wolters Kluwer says 400+ CA firms in India and South Asia use CCH iFirm.[8] It has a dedicated capacity planning module, jobs linked to invoices and a document portal, and it sits in the same family as Wolters Kluwer's research and audit tools. Pricing is by quote. See MyPract vs CCH iFirm.

Zoho Practice: best when clients run on Zoho Books

Zoho Practice is one of the few practice tools here with workpapers built in; for clients on Zoho Books, workpaper adjustments update the client's books.[10] It is free for authorised, advanced and premium Zoho partners, and the client portal is on the Premium plan only.[9] See MyPract vs Zoho Practice.

IRIS: best for UK audit and accounts firms

IRIS Elements Practice Management starts at £28 per user a month (about US$37) with a 30-day trial, and IRIS Practice Engine serves larger firms with configurable dashboards and job staffing.[11][12] It connects with IRIS accounts production and tax for HMRC, MTD and Companies House work. See MyPract vs IRIS.

Xero Practice Manager and MYOB: best for Australia and New Zealand

Xero Practice Manager handles jobs, timesheets, invoices and work in progress, and Xero says it is now part of Xero Partner Hub with Xero Workpapers included.[13] It is free at Silver partner status and above. MYOB's practice tools add BAS and tax lodgement workflows for Australia and New Zealand.[14] See MyPract vs XPM and MyPract vs MYOB.

CCH Axcess Practice and Onvio: best for US CPA firms

US firms that do audit and tax usually pick the practice tool that matches their tax software: CCH Axcess Practice for CCH Axcess Tax, Onvio Firm Management for UltraTax CS.[17] CCH Axcess modules are quote-priced and licensed separately, according to an analysis by Uku, which sells a competing product.[16] Karbon is a strong US and global option for teams that collaborate around a shared email inbox, from US$59 per user a month on annual billing[15]. See MyPract vs CCH Axcess, MyPract vs Onvio and MyPract vs Karbon.

Where does audit workpaper software fit?

Audit workpaper and analytics tools are a different category. They hold or analyse the audit evidence; they don't run the firm's schedule, time or billing. Common names:

Tool What the vendor says it does
Caseware Working Papers A desktop engagement file for audits, reviews and financial reporting, linking the trial balance to adjustments and financial statements[1]
Caseware AI platform (Verity) AI agents that work inside the engagement: risk suggestion, document intelligence, disclosure checklist[2]
Inflo Digital audit platform: audit data analytics, working papers and methodology, client collaboration, quality management[3]
CCH ProSystem fx Engagement Wolters Kluwer's on-premise engagement software for audit workpapers and trial balance[4]
MindBridge AI analysis of the full population of financial transactions to surface risk[5]

A typical setup: the audit file lives in one of these (or an indexed shared drive), and the engagement around it (dates, owners, client requests, time, approvals and the invoice) runs in a practice management tool. MyPract is in the second group only.

How should an audit firm choose?

  1. Start with your country and tax software. If your returns run through CCH Axcess, UltraTax, IRIS, Xero or MYOB, the matching practice tool usually saves the most effort.
  2. Decide whether you want the audit file in the same product. If yes, look at suites with workpapers (Zoho Practice, Xero with Workpapers). If no, pair a practice tool with dedicated audit software.
  3. Check how time becomes an invoice. Audit fees are often budgeted in hours. Look for manager approval, period locks and budget-versus-actual by engagement.
  4. Check client document collection. Audits stall on client requests; a per-engagement portal helps.
  5. Run a real engagement in the trial. Our guide to choosing practice management software has a 30-point checklist.

Who should not choose MyPract

  • US, UK and Australian audit firms that need integration with local tax software or ledgers. MyPract has none; pick CCH Axcess, Onvio, IRIS, Xero Practice Manager or MYOB.
  • Firms that want the audit file in their practice tool. MyPract has no workpapers; Zoho Practice or a dedicated audit tool fits better.
  • Indian firms that depend on UDIN tracking or Income Tax/TRACES sync. Jamku covers these and MyPract doesn't.
  • Firms that need engagement letters, e-signature or payment collection in the same product. MyPract offers none of these.
  • Teams that need native mobile apps. MyPract is a responsive web app.

How we checked

On 13 October 2026 we checked each vendor's own pages (pricing, product and help pages, listed under Sources). Competitor facts for tools we have compared before come from those comparisons, which were re-checked against vendor pages on the same day. Wolters Kluwer's ProSystem fx Engagement page blocked automated access, so we relied on its published page description; confirm details with the vendor. MyPract facts come from our facts page. Non-Indian tools are compared in US dollars at their own published prices against MyPract's US-dollar plans, with no rupee conversion; pound, Australian-dollar and Canadian-dollar prices are converted at the ECB cross rates for 13 October 2026 (£1 = US$1.32, A$1 = US$0.70, CA$1 = US$0.70). Prices exclude GST or VAT, bank forex charges and 18% GST on imported services.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best practice management software for audit firms in India?

For Indian CA and audit firms that run statutory and tax audits as engagements and bill on approved time, MyPract is the strongest fit: a global, AI-native platform that bills Indian firms in rupees, it costs ₹12,000 a year for up to 5 users or ₹84,000 for 20 users, before GST, and its data for Indian firms runs in Mumbai (AWS ap-south-1) today. Jamku costs less than MyPract at every team size. If UDIN tracking or Income Tax and TRACES portal sync matter most, look at Jamku; if you are a larger multi-office firm that wants a dedicated capacity planning module, look at CCH iFirm.

Is MyPract audit software?

No. MyPract runs the engagement around the audit (tasks with owners and dependencies, client document requests, time with manager approval, invoices and a client portal). It does not hold audit workpapers, track UDINs or generate engagement letters. Keep your audit file in dedicated audit software or a well-indexed shared folder alongside it.

What is engagement management software for audit firms?

Software that plans and tracks each audit as a job, with dates, an owner, budgeted hours, tasks in the right order, client requests and time, so partners can see what is late and what is over budget. It is different from audit file or workpaper software, which holds the evidence, testing and review notes for the audit itself.

How much does MyPract cost for an audit firm outside India?

MyPract is a global platform. Firms billed outside India sign up on the US site and pay in US dollars: Startup $189/year for up to 5 users, Growing $49 and Enterprise $39 per user per year. A one-time US$99 setup fee applies to teams of up to 14 users, waived if paid during the trial. Rupee prices apply only to firms billed in India.

Which tools are best for UK, US and Australian audit firms?

UK firms usually do better with IRIS, US CPA firms with CCH Axcess Practice or Thomson Reuters Onvio (built around their US tax products), and Australian and New Zealand firms with Xero Practice Manager or MYOB, because these connect to local tax and ledger systems. MyPract has no US, UK or Australian tax integrations.

Do I still need audit workpaper software if I use practice management software?

Usually yes. Practice management software schedules the audit, assigns the team, records time and bills the client. Workpaper tools such as Caseware Working Papers, Inflo or CCH ProSystem fx Engagement hold the working papers and trial balance work. Many firms run one of each.
