Best Time Tracking and Billing Software for CA Firms in India

By the MyPract team Updated 11 min read

Short answer: For Indian CA firms that bill on effort, MyPract, a global, AI-native platform that bills Indian firms in rupees, is the strongest option for billing control: manager approvals, period locks, rate rules and invoices raised only from approved time, from ₹12,000 a year for up to 5 users. It does not collect payments, send recurring invoices automatically or produce GST e-invoices. ERPCA suits firms that want GST e-invoicing and Razorpay or PayPal collection, Jamku suits task-based billing, Zoho Invoice and Zoho Books suit firms that want GST invoices, online payments and recurring invoices, and Clockify, Toggl and Harvest are low-cost time trackers with no Indian practice features.

Last updated 22 October 2026. Prices and features were checked on each vendor's own pages on 13 October 2026 (ERPCA's pricing on 14 October 2026); prices exclude GST. MyPract is our product, so we cite every competitor claim and say where competitors are stronger.

Most CA firms don't lose fees because they forget to invoice. They lose them in the gap between work done and work billed: hours never logged, hours logged against the wrong client, entries edited after the fact, and retainers that quietly cost more than they earn. Time and billing software is meant to close that gap. This guide compares practice-management tools that track time and bill from it, and the general time trackers many Indian firms use instead. For the full practice-software picture, see our guide to the best practice management software for CA firms.

What should a CA firm look for in time and billing software?

  1. Approvals. Someone senior should see the hours before the client does. Without approval, an invoice is only as good as the least careful timesheet.
  2. Rate rules. A partner's hour on a statutory audit and an article assistant's hour on data entry shouldn't bill at the same rate. Rules by person, client or engagement save re-pricing every invoice.
  3. Period locks. Once a month is approved and billed, nobody should be able to edit it. This is what makes utilisation reports and invoices agree.
  4. Invoicing from time, not beside it. The time entries should be linked to the invoice, so you can see what's unbilled and nothing is billed twice.
  5. GST invoicing. Check whether you need only a GST line, or a CGST/SGST/IGST split, SAC codes and e-invoicing. E-invoicing applies only above the aggregate-turnover threshold notified under GST, so confirm whether it applies to your firm.
  6. Payment collection. UPI or card links reduce debtor days, but many firms still collect by bank transfer and simply need a clear outstanding list.
  7. Practice context. Time logged against an engagement and task tells you which audits overran. Time logged against a free-text project in a generic tracker doesn't.

How does MyPract handle time and billing?

MyPract is a global, AI-native practice management platform for accounting, audit, tax and advisory teams, from a solo practitioner to firms of more than 30 people; Indian firms are billed in rupees and firms elsewhere on US-dollar plans. Time and billing work like this:

  • Capture. A weekly timesheet and a start-stop timer, billable and non-billable, against clients, engagements and tasks.
  • Approve. Managers approve or reject entries. Only approved, unbilled, billable time can go on an invoice.
  • Lock. Managers lock past periods so approved hours can't change.
  • Price. Rate rules by workspace, member, client or engagement, plus bill rates per person.
  • Invoice. Managers create invoices from approved time; the entries are linked to the invoice. Invoices are numbered INV-YYYY-NNNN, carry statuses (Draft, Sent, Paid, Overdue, Void), can be in each client's own currency and print or save as PDF.
  • Measure. Utilisation against each person's weekly capacity, and engagement burndown against budget hours.

What it does not do: MyPract does not collect payments or send payment links, does not send recurring invoices automatically, and does not produce GST e-invoices or split CGST, SGST and IGST. It has no Tally or accounting-ledger integration, so invoices are re-entered or exported to your books. Data domicile by country: a paying firm outside India gets its own instance in its country, so its database, files and server functions stay in-country. Today, with customers in India, everything runs in Mumbai (AWS ap-south-1) through Supabase. See features and pricing, or the plain list on facts.

Where are competitors stronger?

  • ERPCA lists GST e-invoicing, payment and Tally integrations in its SaaS plan, at ₹250 per user a month billed annually with a minimum of five users, so ₹15,000 a year for up to five[2]. It replaced its Run, Grow and Scale packages with this per-user pricing in October 2026; existing customers keep their rate. See MyPract vs ERPCA.
  • Jamku is built around task-based billing: several bills for one task, several tasks in one bill, or a percentage of a task, with receipts that don't need mapping to bills.[1] That suits firms that bill fixed fees per filing. See MyPract vs Jamku.
  • Zoho Invoice and Zoho Books give you GST-compliant invoices, recurring invoices, a customer portal and UPI, card and net-banking payments; Zoho Invoice is free for Indian businesses with up to two users.[4][5] Zoho Practice ties into them for firms already on Zoho. See MyPract vs Zoho Practice.
  • Financial Cents and Karbon include payments and, on Financial Cents, recurring invoices, which matter if you invoice US clients.[9][10] See MyPract vs Financial Cents and MyPract vs Karbon.
  • Clockify, Toggl and Harvest have polished timers, desktop and mobile apps and low prices. Clockify bundles approvals, time locking and invoicing for US$5.49 per seat a month.[8]

Who should not choose MyPract

  • You want clients to pay online from the invoice. MyPract doesn't collect payments. ERPCA, Zoho Invoice, Zoho Books, Harvest or Financial Cents do.
  • Most of your fees are fixed monthly retainers. MyPract has no automated recurring invoices; Zoho Invoice, Zoho Books and Financial Cents do.
  • You must issue GST e-invoices. MyPract doesn't generate them; ERPCA and Zoho Books list e-invoicing.
  • You bill per filing, not per hour. Jamku's task-based billing fits that model more directly.
  • You have 10 or more people and price decides it. From the sixth user MyPract charges per user at a higher rate than Jamku or ERPCA, so Jamku and ERPCA both cost less for a 10-person firm (ERPCA from 7 users). Our pricing guide has year-one costs for 5, 10 and 20 users.
  • You only need a timer. If you already run work elsewhere and just need hours, Clockify or Toggl is less disruptive than switching practice software.
  • You need invoices to post straight into Tally or another ledger. MyPract has no ledger integration.

How we checked

On 13 October 2026 we checked each vendor's own pricing and feature pages: Jamku's pricing and comparison pages and its December 2020 help changelog, ERPCA's pricing page (re-checked on 14 October 2026, after it changed), Zoho Practice, Zoho Invoice and Zoho Books pricing (India), Zoho Invoice's time tracker page, Karbon, Financial Cents, Clockify, Toggl Track and Harvest pricing. Where a page didn't mention a feature, the table says "Not listed" rather than guessing. Non-Indian tools are compared in US dollars at their own published prices against MyPract's US-dollar plans, with no rupee conversion; dollar prices exclude bank forex charges and 18% GST on imported services. MyPract facts come from our facts page and the product code.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time tracking software for a CA firm in India?

It depends on how you bill. If you bill on effort and want a manager to approve hours before they reach an invoice, MyPract offers approvals, period locks and rate rules from ₹12,000 a year for up to 5 users. If you bill fixed fees per task, Jamku's task-based billing may suit you better. If you need GST e-invoicing and online payment collection, look at ERPCA or Zoho Books.

Can MyPract collect payments from clients?

No. MyPract raises invoices from approved time and tracks their status (Draft, Sent, Paid, Overdue, Void), but it does not collect payments or send payment links. You mark an invoice paid when the money arrives.

Does MyPract send recurring invoices automatically?

No. Each invoice is raised by a manager from approved, unbilled time. For fixed monthly retainers that you want invoiced automatically, Zoho Invoice, Zoho Books or Financial Cents are stronger.

Are Toggl, Harvest or Clockify good enough for a CA firm?

For tracking hours, yes, and they are inexpensive. Clockify includes approvals, time locking and invoicing from its Standard plan (US$5.49 per seat a month on annual billing). None of them knows about engagements, GST portal data or DSCs, so most firms pair them with a separate practice tool.

What is a period lock and why does it matter?

A period lock stops anyone changing time entries in a closed period. Once a manager has approved and locked a month, the hours behind an invoice can't be edited back-dated, which keeps invoices, utilisation reports and staff appraisals consistent.

Does MyPract produce GST e-invoices?

No. MyPract invoices apply a GST percentage to the invoice total, but they do not generate e-invoices (IRN) or split CGST, SGST and IGST. ERPCA and Zoho Books list GST e-invoicing.
